Ban on Repackaging to Reduce Unnecessary Resource Waste and to Build Sustainable Korea!

Image
On June 18th, distributors and consumers were put in a great confusion. Articles were released saying the Repackaging Ban starting from the following month practically means that the Government would forbid discount promotions such as “Buy one, get one free”. The article bitterly criticized that the Korean would be the first country to ban on bundle discount in the world. Let’s keep reading to see what this controversial law exactly is and the true intention for it!   Why Ban on Repackaging? China announced an environmentally friendly strategy on disposables that they would start the restriction on single-use products and the affected areas would be expanded nationwide within 5 years on January 19 th , 2020. The world’s biggest city, New York, began the ban on plastic bags and the most populated state, California signed on the legislations to stop the use of plastic containers for hotels’ amenities. Korean government also set up a 5-year roadmap on disposables in November of 2019 and aimed to reduce the consumption rate by 35% by 2020. While they steadily settle the regulations accordingly, an unexpected hurdle appeared. It is COVID-19.   COVID-19 Changed Our Lives WHO officially announced “pandemic” which refers to a disease epidemic that has spread across a large region as this novel virus seems to be highly contagious.   A giant waste land floating in Pacific ocean called GPGP(Great Pacific Garbage Patch) discovered in 1997 by a yacht player put the world in shock. Spotted the marine creatures suffering from the waste flown into the ocean, it became a wake-up call for the generation. 2020 as a starting point, a ‘Plastic-free Movement’ occurred in every country and industry. Green marketing and practices have been the main issues; hotels replace their amenities to bulk dispensers and encourage their customers to use reusable cups. The fashion industries produce items made of recycled materials.   The food packaging industry also actively started developing and applying environmentally friendly packaging that are recyclable and compostable instead of conventional plastics. The painful video clip of a turtle with a plastic straw stuck in its nostril in Costa Rica triggered the plastic-free movement around the world and a plastic straw became the first target to be eliminated. Guidelines to Enhance Paper-Based Packaging Recyclability ①

Image
As the environmental awareness has been growing rapidly in the world, ‘resource circulation’ and ‘sustainability’ have been considered as the most important values in every industrial field. In a way to cooperate with this global movement, CEPI, the Confederation of European Paper Industries, released ‘Paper-based Packaging Recyclability Guidelines’ in November, 2019. It provides every subject in a value chain with the considerations in order to enhance the recyclability of paper-based packaging.   Check Points on Each Material for Recycling The main functions of packaging are to prevent a product or food from being lost or spoiled while delivering the information about the item. The primary food packaging especially requires to meet a variety of standards: They must not cause any harm to our health and need to be waterproof or grease resistant to hold different kinds of foods. Paper-based packaging obtains these properties by coating or laminating on base paper. However, the...
