Would you like to read a poem?

Image
Due to record-breaking heat waves and heavy rain, many people took their summer vacation somewhere local or stayed home. During vacation, we often find ourselves making plans to read a poetry book that seems thin and easy. But these plans rather make us experience the ‘paradox’ of finding ourselves immersed in a poem throughout the day. Poems are written based on colorful thoughts and emotions from keen observation with extraordinary eyes to give comfort and empathy to readers to enrich their lives. We can easily find ‘nature and ecology’ as frequently used materials from most influenced poets. Today, we would like to introduce two poems that reflect concerns about the environment and coexisting with other living creatures on this earth and criticisms of the selfishness of humans. “Farewell” by Jeongrok Lee First of all, let’s read a poem by one of the most influenced poets in Korea, Jeongrok Lee, called ‘Farewell,’ which is included in the 11th collection of the poet, ‘There ar...

[Environmental Story in Media] ‘The Minimalists: Less Is Now’ (2021)

Image
“Less is More, Less is Now!” ‘Are you living an intentional life?’  Today, we are going to talk about <The Minimalists: Less is Now(2021)>, a Netflix documentary about giving you a perspective on how having more stuff doesn’t give you more satisfaction and finding the true sense of freedom away from a clutter of stuff. Mediaus | <The Minimalists: Less is Now (2021)> “Less is More” is a phrase that is commonly used to represent minimalism, which means simplicity is rather fulfilling and natural than excessiveness. This phrase can be applied to various fields such as aesthetics, architecture, and fashion. In the documentary, Joshua Milburn, the “Minimalists,” portrays his philosophy on “possessions” through his own biography. Recounting his childhood, he grew up in poverty with a mother who has suffered from substance abuse but with enormous efforts, he was able to become the youngest director at a major corporation with suburban houses, luxury cars, and designer stuff. Celebrating rePAPER’s 8th Anniversary, Every Adventure Requires a First Step

Image
“Every adventure requires a first step.” Among other great quotes in ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ the fairy tale that inspires people with surreal symbolism and mathematical codes, this is one of my favorites. rePAPER is always taking the first step. It seems to be a clever choice to chase after the path that is already there rather than to be the one to discover it for security and cost efficiency. Yet, being praised for cleverness is not a reward for the adventure and pride that the REPAS: the staff of rePAPER are rooting for. The pioneer of behavior economics Richard Thaler, 2017 recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, mentions in his book ‘Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics’ that people tend not to plan or choose to take the unpredictable path since they value the pain of the losing more than the happiness of having. In other words, in the social structure, the fear of criticism and loss when failed is greater than praise and compensation when succeeded t...

We are living at a time where eco-friendliness is not a choice but has become a must. Now, the question is how to inspire people to be concerned in the environment, change their perceptions and take action. SIEFF is an annual event held in honor of World Environment Day. This year marks its 19th anniversary which was hosted by the Korea Green Foundation and sponsored by Seoul Metropolitan Government, Korea Ministry of Environment, EBS and more.
