A special guest lecturer CEO Cheol Yoon with Junghwa High School Advanced Science Team

The CEO of rePAPER Cheol Yoon had a memorable agenda last September 3, Saturday. It was an extracurricular activity lecture session with Junghwa High School, Seoul, advanced science team students.

The students won the battle of the temptation of sweet sleep-in on the Saturday morning to arrive on time and the vice-principal among other science teachers gave them a warm welcome.

The Advanced Science Team at Junghwa High School

Junghwa High School’s advanced science team involves first and second year students who are in science clubs and want to major in science and engineering. The students are having opportunities to comprehend both scientific principles and theoretical backgrounds and to explore their future careers through ‘science academy’, where they can experience various exploratory experiments and ‘special lectures from science experts’, where they can observe the cases of where scientific technology is actually applied.

Especially ‘special lectures from science experts,’ which started last April, was held by 4 experts from various fields of science and each of them talked the vivid scenes of the fields with the topics of ‘Interesting brain stories’, ‘Astronomy in our lives’, ‘Modern society and new materials’, and ‘Plastic paper packaging materials’ by CEO Yoon.

Global Environment and Me

On this day, CEO Yoon gave a lecture on the environmental pollution of plastic packaging material, eco-friendly methods, greenwashing, and rePAPER’s eco-friendly coatings and products.

During the 90 minutes of the not so easy topic lecture, it was impressive to see students paying attention in their own ways; students who listened with their eyes shining, students who took notes and students who tried to shake off their sleep. 😊

The students of the advanced science team seemed to realize the seriousness of environmental problems in their generation, especially plastic pollution. When Yoon asked questions during the lecture, the students were shy at first but were not hesitant to express their thoughts. Even after the lecture, some students asked insightful and practical questions that left Yoon in awe, which made him do his best to explain.

To conclude the lecture, CEO Yoon added that “You may not understand the need to learn complex science or math and so was I. But as I became a part of the society and figured out my path, I found it very useful. Although it is a little frustrating at the moment, I hope you think of it as a milestone for our society and the global environment.”

I should learn to make a contribution to the world

After the lecture, the students gave their pure, yet earnest and concrete thoughts that reflected how much they understood the lecture and their desire to contribute to society.

‘Mr. Yoon mentioned that the most effective way to reduce global warming is to ‘controlling’ the way of our spendings and to do so ‘resource circulation’ is the key, which includes both material and systematic recycling. I’ve learned that there is a wide range of recycling that I looked back at myself on how I recycled.’

‘The lecture reminded me of environmental problems once again of why plastic is causing all these problems around the world and what could be the replacements of plastics that I was able to actually listen to and not fall asleep.’

The advisor of the program, Ms. Baek Ji-eun, also added that ‘This was a great opportunity for the students to expand their viewpoint on their future career in the science field. The theme of eco-friendly packing that is related to the climate crisis led the students to understand the process of running an eco-friendly packaging company, the procedure of developing the products, and the introduction of recyclable materials with visual aids.

Especially, I could feel that Mr. Yoon really cares for the next generation from the way he talked to the students as if he would talk to his own kid or a friendly neighbor.’

Expectations and Support

Yoon included that ‘Although I had a wonderful time with the students to tell them the practical examples of how scientific knowledge and technology acquired in high school are applied to our daily jobs, it could've been better if I could have had time to have students actually experience the field. There is a huge gap between the theoretical and practical conditions of environmental pollution, therefore, young aspiring scientists in the field of eco-friendly packaging development are expected to grow as creative and innovate as senior scientists.’

Also, Yoon wanted to thank the students for attending the lecture. As reading the feedback from the students, he felt proud and grateful.

It might have been the clear sky beyond the horizon of Bonghwa Mountain that the rePAPER team felt light footed afterwards but it was definitely the students at the Junghwa High School who gave us a hope of how they could give us the answer to environmental pollution and global warming.

rePAPER pray for Junghaw High School advanced science team all the best. 😊
