Core Competence Lecture for Paper Technicians by Cheol Yoon, CEO of rePAPER

There was an annual conference for paper technicians on June 22-24 organized by Korea Pulp and Korea Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry at Hotel Interciti, Daejeon.

Korea Pulp and Korea Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry was established in 1967 for the purpose of exchanging and cooperating with people in academia and business to educate paper technicians and to pursue various projects, such as academic presentations and technology information collections, for the pulp and paper industry in Korea.

Though this conference has been postponed a few times because of the pandemic, many people in the paper industry attended to have a meaningful time.

For this 56th conference, top experts in the field were invited to give lectures and about 50 technicians, and management support team of the paper industry attended for the required education paper making process, such as the process of pulp fiber to paper material preparation process and the initial, manufacturing and complete stage of paper making, as well as education on special functions of paper, packaging applications and global facility trends.

During the three-day conference, the attendees had discussion sessions on various trials and commercialization of paper technology and industry.

One of the attendees commented that through this conference they had a chance to experience transformations and advances in the paper industry of today and explore the possibilities of cooperation in the future.

Cheol Yoon, our CEO, gave a lecture on ‘Paper Surface Treatment Methods and Purpose.’ This lecture was on giving functionality to different types of industrial paper and understanding the functionality and application of raw materials and structures, etc.

CEO Yoon said, “It was a pleasure to see engineers at the conference with a lot of enthusiasm in the eco-friendly market to replace plastic packaging, and have high expectations for material development and commercialization of products through innovative ideas that shone a bright light on the future of the industry.

Despite the fact that the paper industry is often called a smokestack industry, with extended research and challenges of technicians with intelligence and imagination, we will soon have to develop eco-friendly packaging that the world demands.”

As he has mentioned, the paper industry may seem distant from emerging fields like bio, metaverse, green energy, or IT platform industries.

Thus, some say that the paper industry is in a slump since the demand of printing paper was at 23% before but is gradually decreasing.

However, recently, as ESG emerged as an essential management factor, the related industry is inspired to develop special papers with simple value chains or eco-friendly products with resource circulation.

The existence of paper is one of the greatest inventions in the history of civilization.

Thanks to paper, ideologies, and technologies of the East and the West were transported and passed on to the next generation so mankind was able to continuously evolve.

Furthermore, now, paper is used in various areas of our lives, such as printing papers for books and magazines, as sanitary papers for tissues and diapers, and as packaging papers for various bags and protection.

However, people in the paper industry do not settle for what we have and strive to develop eco-friendly packaging materials with various functional barriers that can be part of resource circulation and eventually replace plastic packaging. Just like the slogan of rePAPER ‘RETURN TO PAPER.’

We give a round of applause to the people in the paper industry for continuously researching and challenging themselves to make a sustainable world by preserving the environmental identity.
