REPA COAT’s Matchless Recyclability, PTS as well as UL!

The excellent recyclability of rePAPER’s environmentally friendly coated paper, REPA COAT, is once again officially proven by PTS in Europe.

Many paper mills in the world have been developing environmentally friendly food-grade paper with ceaseless R&D. They have been trying to develop a product that functions as a plastic container but still holds paper’s natural properties, recyclability and compostability.

Located in Germany, PTS was founded in 1951 and has been providing a variety of services including fiber-based solutions and development in research, consult, training, and tests. Under the mission of ‘Fiber-based solutions for tomorrow’s products’, PTS is a testing institution to analyze and evaluate paper, board, and fiber-based packaging while developing special paper, fiber composites, packaging with barrier coatings, and others.

PTS evaluates a product’s recyclability under 3 criteria such as disintegrability, adhesive contaminations, and unevenness of recovered pulp. This is to confirm if the recycled pulp can be efficiently and widely used or its usage is limited as a raw material.

rePAPER applied the test with REPA COAT for a hot cup and a cold cup respectively to check the recyclability, too.

The reject rates of the one-side coated paper for a hot cup and double-side coated paper for a cold cup are 0.05% and 3.1% respectively, meaning over 98% on average can be recycled. Considering that over 20% of a conventional paper cup is screened due to the plastic coating, rePAPER’s product shows outstanding recyclability. The figures rePAPER’s products obtained are about the same as the one from uncoated paper. Furthermore, the handsheet made from the recovered pulp has an even surface without any major tears and therefore it can be used to produce high-quality recycled paper.

The standards and criteria to evaluate recyclability of paper, especially food-grade ones, still vary in each country and industry. Each testing institution also approaches the matter with a different aspect and view. Thus, the results from PTS and UL prove that rePAPER’s environmentally friendly coating technology is in accordance with various and universal standards.

rePAPER is now paving the way to the expansion of environment-friendly technology and to the development of the world-leading products and applications. We hope these recyclable products not only stay in the stage of production and consumption, but also leads to a genuine resource circulation through proper collecting and recycling.
