ECO US, ECO EARTH! The Invitation to 2020 SEFF!

The largest international environmental film festival in Asia, Seoul International Eco Film Festival – hereinafter SEFF, has introduced outstanding global environmental films. Since its launch in 2004, the festival has been served as a place where people look for the ways for coexistence of the environment and human beings and discuss potential solutions and the acts required for the future.

Let’s take an example of the film <Plastic China> that won the Green Competition Best Feature Film at the 15th SEFF in 2017. This film was known to trigger China’s ban on recyclable waste imports and even to affect the <Act on the Promotion of saving and recycling of resources> in Korea in 2018. This movie is about the environment polluted by our reckless consumption and dispose of single-use plastic packaging and how it is closely connected with people’s lives. It criticizes human being’s indiscreet consumption on resource in the name of convenience and how seriously the pollution has been progressed. The movie certainly became a wake-up call for global society on environmental pollution.

Hello, 2020 SEFF!

Under the theme of “ECO US, ECO EARTH”, 2020 SEFF emphasized on the fact that humans are a part of ecosystem and on the value of coexistence. It introduced a variety of films covering environmental issues such as climate change, Anthropocene, ecosystem, animal rights, and waste and tried to seek practices for sustainable earth.

Especially, JTBC, a Korean subscription network and broadcasting company, co-hosted 2020 SEFF with Korea Green Foundation and Seoul Eco Film festival Organize Committee. During the festival, JTBC channel aired <Food for Change>, <Motherload>, and <Grit> that delivered the value of environment protection.

Switch to Digital Film Festival! The More and The Safer!

SEFF transited its form to a digital screening from this year in order to prevent the risk of virus infection and to join in reducing carbon emission. People booked a movie ticket from June 25th on the website. According to one of the news media, as of June 29th, 14 roundings out of 83 online and 6 out of 14 for the theater screening were booked. It showed how people became more and more interested in the environment. The on-site film festival was separately scheduled on July 4th and 5th at Megabox theater in Seongsu branch.

This film festival introduced the movies that showed how closely we and the surrounding are connected, what kinds of problems we would face due to the polluted environment after the industrial revolution, and how we, human beings, could add the value of sustainability to the development.

Medical waste, temporarily permitted disposables for public health and hygiene, higher preference on delivery foods as well as increasing growth of HMR market has sped up the environmental pollution all over the world. Fortunately, SEFF gave us opportunities to consider if we are modest enough as a mere traveler for a time being on this earth and if our will and directivity towards sustainable development are on its right path. rePAPER conveys our sincere gratitude to everyone who tries to deliver the message of the importance of restoring the environment through a movie with what they can and have.
