18th Seoul Eco Film Festival Dreaming of ECOvolution!

The 18th Seoul Eco Film Festival was held on June 3rd to 9th, which is known to be the largest scale focusing on the environmental issues in Asia and also one of the world’s 3 biggest eco film festivals. It has been moving forward overcoming the difficulty as it is not for the commercial films. This year, it was co-organized by Korean Green Foundation and MBC – one of the leading Korean television and radio network companies - and a celebrity Song Eun Yi, and a film director, Jang Hangjun were appointed as ‘Eco-friend’, representatives for those who pursue eco-friendly life.

All the Aspects of the Festival

The slogan of this year’s Seoul Eco Film Festival is ECOvolution, which is a compound word of Eco as in ecosystem and the environment and evolution/revolution as in changes and innovation. Therefore, the word ECOvolution delivers a message that we should accomplish a grand switch for the environment for the future. During the festival, 64 movies were released and most of them were showing on the internet while a few were on-screen offline.

The festival announced its beginning on June 3rd on Youtube. Even though the event was held without any audience due to COVID-19, some from main parties joined on-site and many celebrities online asked for the public’s active interest and participation, expecting the increase of social awareness in the environment by this film festival. The opening ceremony was followed by an opening film titled ‘Who We Were’ directed by Marc Bauder. It examines the relationship between the environment and the world’s economy in various aspects by meeting many modern philosophers and scientists.

The essence of a film festival is surely the awarding part! ‘The Last Forest’ by Luiz Bolognes and ‘Land and Housing’ by Gisung Kim were awarded for the best picture in the international film section and Korea film section respectively.

‘The Last Forest’ shows about the right to life of a tribe in Amazon who fights against the forest destruction and ‘Land and Housing’ tells how un-environmentally friendly it is to reconstruct and regenerate cities in Korea. Especially Luiz’s movie won the best prize unanimously with a review saying “The movie offers you a very intense experience beyond the border, race, and cultural barrier and is well-timed for the issue.”

Offline Events During the Festival

Meanwhile, there was a special event held for the festival called ‘2021 No More Plastic’ at Under Stand Avenue which is a culture complex near Seoul Forest. The event was designed for everyone to think about the waste problems including plastics.

As a company that cares most about the environment and humans, rePAPER could not miss the chance to visit this wonderful event! Why don’t you come and experience with us?

Exhibition: <HELLO! MR. SEA!>

Fast fashion is a term used for the mass production of cheap and high-fashion clothing. However, it is known to be one of the serious causes to emit a great deal of carbon and pollute water. Realizing the problem, 9 embroidery artists made and displayed upcycling pieces using their private clothing items under the theme of ‘Sea and Its Life’. The exhibition reminded us of some articles about the deep connection between microplastics and fashion industries and how our life habits have been affecting the environment.

Resource Circulation Experiment: RE;CODE

RE;CODE is one of the leading upcycling fashion brands in Korea. The company started in 2012 to reduce the clothing waste that is incinerated once they become too old-fashioned to sell and to protect nature. During the event, RE;CODE helped the participants to make an AirPods case using a discarded wetsuit. This easy-to-follow upcycling experiment made us think about other creative resource circulation ways about the items around us.

Sustainable Consumption: NoMoPl (No More Plastic) Market

Many social enterprises that are loved for upcycling materials and sensational designs were found at the market. May interesting booths were spotted; visitors could see the whole process of ‘Regen Seoul’ which manufactures fibers by recycling PET bottles, the discarded coffee capsule upcycled as a flower pot, and a fluffy doll by using a defective sock.

After Finishing the 18th Seoul Eco Film Festival

With such diverse and fine contents, however, the film festival was not able to get as much attention and participation from the public as anticipated. If the event ‘2021 No More Plastic’ and offline movie showing had been held together on the same date, it may have shown its fame as the biggest eco film festival in Asia.

On the other hand, however, it is inspiring that it does not stop going forward even during this pandemic and Seoul Eco Film Festival is surely growing to be Green Hub of Asia by everyone’s effort. As an environment-friendly coating solution company, rePAPER will support the festival, working together for environmental protection and preservation.
